7 Steps to Boost Up Your Immune System

Time is flying by and winter season is quickly approaching.  Wintertime often means sneezing, coughing, and sore throats. These common cold and flu-like symptoms can often times be avoided by taking the right steps to optimize your health.  It is important to boost your immune system BEFORE you get sick.   Therefore in case you do become infected, your body can fight it off without a problem. Here are some simple ways to pump up your immunity.

1)   See a Chiropractor.  Chiropractic care can help by removing stressors from your nervous system through spinal manipulation, muscle work, lymphatic reflex points, and emotional techniques.  At our office we treat the whole person with Applied Kinesiology, Kinesiotaping, Cold Laser Therapy, and proper nutrition.

2)   Take Whole Food Supplements. Whole food supplementation can have many positive effects.  Products from Standard Process such as Echinacea, Calcium Lactate, and Congaplex can all help fight infections and improve immune system function without the side effects of medications.  Other whole food supplements we use in our office are Juice Plus products that are comprised of fruits and vegetables.

3)   Sleep 6-9 Hours Every Night. Your body requires adequate sleep each night to recharge itself.  Sufficient amount of sleep can stimulate proper brain function, learning capacity, and normal bone growth in children.

4)   Wash Your Hands.  One of the best ways to avoid germs is to wash your hands frequently.  Since germs are easily passed back and forth, be sure to sanitize hands and clean light switches, door handles, and counter-tops often.

5)   Drink Water.  Water is the fuel for your body much the same as gasoline is the fuel for your car.  Your body cannot function properly without water.  We recommend drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces each day.

6)   Exercise.  Our bodies were designed and built to move.  Some of our biggest muscles in our body are the ones we sit on each day!  Instead we need to keep joints mobile and blood flowing through regular exercise.  Try to aim for at least a minimum of 30 minutes of activity per day.

7)   Avoid Sugar and Starches. Refined sugar and starches can take a toll on your immune system.  Your body needs to work harder to break down these products which can decrease the function and effectiveness of fighting off disease. Replace sugary treats with fresh fruits, raw veggies and nuts.

Muti-Vitamin

Calcium Lactate- Did you know there is more calcium in the human body than all of other minerals combined?! Calcium is a common supplement sold, but many types are not absorbed properly. This product is highly absorbable from the GI tract in this calcium to magnesium ratio of 5:1. Calcium lactate is helpful for bone health/osteoporosis, soft tissue repair, infections, fevers, and much more!

Catalyn- This is the multiple vitamin and trace mineral product we use in our office by Standard Process. It is the original vitamin founded by Dr. Royal Lee in 1929. This product contains 12 raw foods that are cold processed and blended. Catalyn is a product that supports the entire body and activates enzyme systems.

Cataplex A- Vitamin A is helpful for mucous membranes health. it is often used in cases of eye problems, cystitis, nephritis, kidney stones, and general skin disorders.

Cataplex B- This product is a vitamin B complex that contains B vitamins 1, 2, and 3 which can help to improve nerve conductivity, blood sugar imbalances, hypotension, depression, and anxiety.

 Cataplex CVitamin C helps to boost your immune system, vascular integrity, increases oxygen carrying capacity of the blood stream, and activates the adrenal glands.  This product is helpful for infections, wound healing, inflammation, and stress. It can be found in citrus fruits such as apples, oranges, and strawberries.

Cataplex D- Vitamin D is used for calcium assimilation, hypotension, hemorrage, and lack of sun exposure. It helps to pick up calcium from the gut and puts it into the blood.

Healthy Heart Recipes

Tomato Roasted Mackerel                                 

                           Serves 4
1 pound mackerel fillets
2 tablespoons low-fat canola mayonnaise
1/2 cup basil leaves
2 large tomatoes, sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1. Preheat oven to 400°F.  Place the fish on a baking sheet & spread with the mayonnaise.  Layer the basil & tomatoes on top of each fillet & sprinkle with salt & pepper.  Bake until the fish is just opaque, 5-10 minutes depending on thickness.

268 calories, 22 g protein, 4 g. carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 18 g total fat, 4 g saturated fat, 79 mg cholesterol, 450 mg sodium

WHITE GRAPE & LEMON FOAM       Serves 2

1 cup white grapes, seeded or seedless, plus extra to serve
3/4 cup sparkling mineral water
2 large scoops of frozen plain yogurt
1-1/2 tablespoon concentrated frozen lemonade

1.  Place the grapes, mineral water, frozen yogurt & lemonade in a food processor & process until smooth.
2. Pour the foam into glasses, top with a few grapes, & serve.

Allergy Fighting Recipes

Roasted Salmon with Sautéed Greens

Prep Time- 5 minutes    Cook Time- 10 minutes    Serves- 4 people

  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar  
  • 1 tsp. mustard powder
  • 2 T. brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 T. olive oil
  • 8 oz. baby spinach
  • 1-1/4 lb. salmon, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 large red onion, cut into thin strips
  1. Preheat the broiler or grill.  In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, & salt.  Brush 1/2 of the mixture over the salmon.  Broil or grill until opaque about 4-5 mins, brushing with vinegar mixture after 2 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Add the onion & cook until lightly browned, 2 mins.  Cover & cook until tender, 2 mins.  Add the spinach and cook  stirring until almost wilted, 1 minute.  Add the remaining vinegar mixture & cook stirring until spinach is wilted and sauce thinckens slightly, 1 minute.
  3. Divide the spinach mixture equally among 4 dinner plates.  Top each serving witha piece of salmon.

365 calories, 31grams protein, 13 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fiber, 20 grams total fat, 4 grams sat. fat, 84 mg. cholesterol, 428 mg. sodium

Pineapple Tango  (serves 2 people)     pineapple tango smoothie 

  • 1/2 c. pineapple juice
  • scant 1/2 c. water
  • generous 3/4 c. plain yogurt
  • 3/4 c. frozen pineapple chunks
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 T. brown sugar
  • 1 peach, cut into chunks & frozen

Pour the pineapple juice, lemon juice, & water into a food processor/blender.  Add sugar & yogurt & process until blended.  Add the peach & pineapple chunks & process until smooth.  Pour mixture into glasses and serve.
